Sewing machine or overlocker — what is the difference?

This is one of the most common machine-choice wobbles. A sewing machine and an overlocker do not do the same job, even though both matter in sewing.

A sewing machine is usually the main place to begin. An overlocker is brilliant for finishing, stretch sewing and cleaner edges, but it is not the usual first answer for most beginners on its own.

Compare machine types hero

Sewing machine

Usually the main starting machine. Best for construction, general sewing, everyday projects, many beginner makes, and a wide range of practical work.

Overlocker

Best for neater seam finishing, edge finishing, and helping stretch fabrics feel more comfortable and polished.
